English lesson on Spartathlon

On 9th June 2022 teacher Ester Trobec did an English lesson on Spartathlon. The idea for the lesson came to her mind on the Greek mobility when teachers attended a seminar entitled “The Educational Value of the Olympic Games” in the city of Marathon.

Pupils from 9th grade watched the movie 36 Hours to Sparta that talks about the runners that participate in this unique race and talks about what makes these people undergo such hard training sessions, participate and finish the race. I was deeply touched by the movie and decided to present this event to my students. First, pupils watched the video and did a listening comprehension exercise. They had to answer some questions the teacher prepared for them.

Later, pupils did a reading comprehension: the teacher prepared a text, the pupils had to read it and answer the questions. They had to translate new vocabulary by scanning the QR-code of the online dictionary on their mobile phones and translate the words into Slovenian.

At the end of the lesson they had to write their impressions about the movie. Pupils liked the lesson very much because they have never heard of Spartathlon, they learnt something new and were moved by the participants’ confessions.

Pupils liked the lesson because they have learnt something new about a topic they didn’t know before. They were impressed by the runners and their stories. They were touched the most by thew woman who lost her child to leukemia. They have found out that it takes perseverance and effort to achieve your goals.
